What is Engine Blueprinting?
Engine blueprinting is the process of setting every tolerance in the engine
to its optimum value. Engines from the production line are often quite
“baggy” with gear changes feeling notchy from incorrect shimming, vibration
from poorly balanced cranks, rough low speed running from valve clearances
being too large - generally speaking the performance of an engine can be
improved dramatically.

After blueprinting and very fine crank balancing, gear changes will feel more
positive and vibrations will be virtually eradicated, reducing strain on the
engine, aiding longevity. Valves will seal correctly, piston to head
clearance (squish) will be optimised and cams will be finely timed bringing
your bike’s performance right up to scratch.

You get ...
All components cleaned de-carbonised and inspected,
clean sludge from crank, polish journals, plastigauge crank journal and fit with
the correct specification bearings, shim crank, primary , secondary
shafts and selector drum, check piston ring end gap, set squish, hone
cylinders, lap valves, set valve clearances, dial cams to specs, check
piston to valve clearance when fitting cams big and valves .
NOTE valve clearances are set to a tighter spec of shimming meaning
clearances do not need maintenance for a very long time afterwards .
Performance parts such as pistons, big bore kits, cams etc, supplied by the
customer or through CJS can be fitted free whilst your engine is being blueprinted or having a
super set-up. Customer supplied parts must be cleared for quality by
CJS first.
Super Setup
The super set-up is
simply a top end blueprint. This package will give you a more
crisp and responsive engine with a
power gain. The valve clearances are set to the tighter Ducati spec of
shimming meaning they will not need adjusting again for a long while
after.
We will...
Clean and check components, set squish,
hone cylinders, De-coke cylinder heads , lap valves, set valve clearances, dials cams to choice of specifications
and check rotor nut.
Big
bore kits, cams, high compression pistons etc can be fitted as part of the
package for no additional labour cost. Most customers choose a gas flow, skim and Power Commander
(PC3) set up to even further enhance their engine as a package deal.
Cylinder Head Optimisation
Cylinder heads are optimised by flow bench using the latest digital software.
See head prep pages and related articles.
Cost Effective
Modifications
Through experience
CJS knows that each engine has its own little area where cost effective
modifications can be applied. These include optional cam settings, re-shaping
ports and combustion chambers. Some Ducati cylinder heads can be sufficiently
milled to give a substantial increase
in compression ratio and power without purchasing expensive pistons (see 916
projects page). Whilst blueprinting your engine these cost
effective modifications can be provided at extra
cost. This can be discussed during your initial consultation on
specification requirements.
